The Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, has taken a decisive step in response to the Edo State House of Assembly’s bid to impeach Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu by constituting a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations leveled against him.

In a statement issued on Friday and endorsed by the Chief Registrar of the Edo State High Court, B. O. Osawaru, the panel, headed by retired Justice S.A. Omonua, was appointed to scrutinize the accusations outlined in the impeachment notice against Shaibu.

The statement clarified that Justice Okungbowa’s action was in accordance with the powers conferred upon him by Section 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

It read, “The Honourable Chief Judge of Edo State, Honourable Justice D. I. Okungbowa, has constituted the panel of seven persons to investigate the allegations contained in the impeachment notice against the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu.”

The panel includes individuals such as Professor Violet Aigbokhaebo, Professor Boniface Onomion Edegbai, Professor Theresa Akpoghome, Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, Andrew Oliha, and Idris Abdulkareen.

The Edo State House of Assembly had passed a resolution on March 19, 2024, directing the Chief Judge to establish a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations against Shaibu. However, Shaibu sought legal recourse by approaching the Abuja Federal High Court, seeking to halt the impeachment process.

Although the court declined Shaibu’s request for an interim order, it granted the motion for substituted service and adjourned the matter to April 15, 2024.

The constitution of the panel marks a crucial development in the ongoing impeachment saga, underscoring the intricate legal and political dynamics at play in Edo State.
