The office of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has issued a formal clarification on the official appellation of Bola Ahmed Tinubu following what it described as repeated inaccuracies by media organisations and other institutions.

In a statement released on Friday, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the SGF, Yomi Odunuga, said the clarification was personally authorised by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Odunuga said Akume had expressed concern over what he called avoidable and embarrassing errors in the way the president was being formally addressed in public communications and media reports.

“For the record, the correct and official appellation is: ‘His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria’,” the statement said.

The presidency advised media organisations and members of the public to verify official titles through the government’s communication channels before publication, warning that such lapses undermined professional standards.

According to the statement, the clarification became necessary after an error was observed in the naming and designation of the president in a publication by a national newspaper on Wednesday, 7 May 2026.

Akume, according to Odunuga, said the mistake could have been avoided through proper verification from official sources.

The government also directed the public to the SGF office’s official communication platforms for confirmation of formal titles and government information, including its accounts on Facebook, Instagram and X, formerly known as Twitter.
