FG vows crackdown on fake university certificates, minister declares

Government Pledges Vigorous Pursuit of Fraudulent Credential Holders Following Investigation into Degree Mills

Must read

In a resolute stance against the proliferation of counterfeit university certificates, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced on Tuesday that security agencies would actively pursue individuals found with fake academic credentials. This declaration comes in the wake of a comprehensive investigation initiated by the Federal Government into the operations of degree certificate racketeers within the country.

Prompted by an exposé published by the Daily Nigerian, shedding light on the illicit practices of degree mills in the Benin Republic, the government established an Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee on Degree Certificate Milling. The investigative report uncovered the ease with which individuals could obtain degrees within a remarkably short timeframe, prompting swift action from Nigerian authorities.

The committee’s mandate extends beyond the borders of Nigeria, encompassing an inquiry into the establishment and operations of Nigerian private universities established within the past 15 years. Public participation has been solicited, with the committee receiving memoranda and conducting on-site visits to institutions in the Benin Republic to gather evidence.

Addressing citizens at a quarterly engagement event in Abuja, Minister Mamman underscored the government’s commitment to tackling the issue of fake degrees head-on. He assured the public that once the committee submits its findings, stringent measures would be implemented to identify and apprehend individuals holding fraudulent certificates, with security agencies spearheading the effort.

Echoing Mamman’s sentiments, Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, emphasized the significance of the engagement in fostering transparency and accountability within the education sector. The event, aimed at fostering dialogue and building trust with stakeholders, represents a proactive step towards enhancing operational efficiency and addressing systemic challenges within the education system.
