The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee issued a stern summons to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, compelling him to appear before the committee on March 5, 2024, regarding alleged leakages within the e-payment solution platform, REMITA.

Expressing deep frustration over Cardoso’s repeated absence from previous hearings, the committee emphasized the critical importance of his testimony in advancing its investigative process on revenue irregularities linked to the REMITA platform.

In a letter addressed to Cardoso and signed by committee chairman Bamidele Salam, the committee underscored its authority to compel the attendance of any individual within Nigeria for testimony and the production of pertinent documents.

The letter, titled “Investigation of revenue leakages through the REMITA platform and non-compliance substantially with the standard operating procedure and other allied service level agreements 2023,” served as a final notice to Cardoso to honor the committee’s summons.

Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, the letter warned of potential legal consequences should Cardoso fail to appear, citing provisions within the Legislative Houses (Powers & Privileges Act 2017) and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The committee’s missive stressed the imperative for Cardoso to attend the hearing in person, without representation, and to bring along relevant officers knowledgeable about the issues under investigation.

Furthermore, the committee rebuked Cardoso for previous attempts to send a representative to the hearings, reiterating its insistence on the personal presence of chief accounting officers to address concerns directly.

In light of the constitutional provisions outlined in the letter, the committee emphasized the seriousness of the matter and urged Cardoso to heed the summons and cooperate fully with the investigative proceedings.
