Ahmed Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development in Nigeria, has outlined plans to develop cost-effective housing designs aimed at promoting the construction of quality and affordable housing for the majority of Nigerians. The initiative is set to address the housing needs of 80% of low- and medium-income earners in the country.

Dangiwa revealed these plans during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, led by its president, Shonubi Olayemi, at the ministry headquarters. The minister emphasized the significance of prioritizing affordable housing, stating that it is crucial to address the housing needs of the majority of Nigeria’s population, particularly those in the low- to medium-income category.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Deputy Director for Information, Badamasi Haiba, Dangiwa highlighted the creation of an affordable housing design committee within his first week in office. This committee is tasked with developing more efficient design options that align with the income profiles of Nigerians falling within the specified income bracket.

Dangiwa stated, “Our goal is to come up with the most efficient, workable, and sustainable, affordable designs that will help us deliver on our mandate. These hardworking citizens equally deserve to live in decent, well-planned homes and neighborhoods that reflect the principles of inclusivity and fairness.”

The minister acknowledged the efforts of professionals within the ministry who have been actively involved in this initiative and expressed a desire to gather feedback from stakeholders before unveiling the designs to the public. The focus is on creating housing concepts that are not only cost-effective but also efficient and sustainable, ensuring that the housing needs of the targeted demographic are met effectively.

This move signals a commitment by the Nigerian government to address the challenges of affordable housing, acknowledging the importance of providing decent living spaces for a significant portion of the population.
