In a bid to address the pressing issue of food insecurity exacerbated by surging inflation rates, the Katsina State Government has earmarked more than N10 billion for the purchase of grains to distribute to vulnerable residents during the month-long Ramadan fast.

The announcement, made by Governor Dikko Radda’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, underscores the state’s commitment to providing essential sustenance to its citizens during the holy month, which commences today (Monday), according to the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

Mohammed revealed that Governor Radda has spearheaded the formation of committees at both state and local government levels to supervise the equitable distribution of foodstuffs. The initiative aims to ensure that approximately 2.1 million residents receive much-needed assistance throughout Ramadan.

Amid skyrocketing food prices nationwide, exacerbated by unprecedented inflation levels, the Katsina governor affirmed the state’s resolve to provide relief to its populace. He detailed plans to sell maize, millet, and guinea corn at subsidized rates of N20,000 per bag, with a limit of 10 measures per buyer to ensure fair distribution.

Governor Radda underscored the importance of accountability in the distribution process, emphasizing that proceeds from grain sales must be remitted to the state committee for proper documentation and deposit into government accounts. Additionally, 33,000 elderly and vulnerable families across the state will receive complimentary food items along with cash donations to alleviate their hardship.

As Katsina State takes proactive measures to combat food insecurity during Ramadan, the initiative reflects a broader commitment to social welfare and equitable access to essential resources, particularly in times of economic strain and heightened vulnerability.
