Lagos Assembly urges swift constitutional amendment for state police amid rising insecurity

The Lagos State House of Assembly convened in a plenary session presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, calling on the National Assembly to initiate immediate constitutional amendments enabling the establishment of state police forces. Against the backdrop of heightened insecurity, the Assembly also emphasized the imperative of equipping the Neighborhood Safety Corps to bolster security measures.

Recent reports The punch underscored the severity of the security situation, with a violent incident in the Ikorodu area of Lagos resulting in fatalities, abductions, and injuries. The state police command confirmed the tragic loss of Suru Arije and Ilufoye Azeez, along with injuries sustained by four vigilantes during the attack.

Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Eromosele Ebhomele, issued a statement on Monday reflecting the Assembly’s grave concerns regarding the pervasive insecurity plaguing both Lagos and the nation at large.

During deliberations under the banner of ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance,’ Speaker Obasa emphasized the urgency of legislative action. He asserted, “The recent attack on a commercial bus and the abduction of passengers underscore the pressing need for decisive measures.”

In advocating for proactive measures, Obasa urged the National Assembly to expedite constitutional amendments, stressing the need for timely action rather than deferring crucial decisions. “This administration is at the outset of its four-year term. The National Assembly should commence the amendment process without delay, and we stand ready to contribute to addressing the imperative for state police,” he declared.

The Lagos Assembly’s call for swift action reflects a growing consensus among lawmakers and stakeholders on the urgent necessity of restructuring security frameworks to mitigate the escalating threats facing communities nationwide.
