The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, emphasized the alignment of the NCS’s evolving strategies with the goals of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) during a lecture at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA). In his lecture titled “Nigeria’s Economic Growth and Development: Reforming and Positioning the Customs Service for the African Continental Free Trade and Other Emerging Challenges,” CGC Adeniyi highlighted the importance of adapting to a paperless process, enhancing trade facilitation, and engaging with the business community.

While acknowledging the primary role of revenue generation, CGC Adeniyi stressed the equal significance of trade facilitation in the current dynamic landscape. He emphasized the need for a nuanced approach, recognizing the multifaceted role of the NCS.

“Striking a balance between facilitating trade and meeting revenue targets requires a nuanced approach,” Adeniyi stated, underscoring the importance of making informed trade-offs to foster sustainable economic development, especially for small and medium-scale entrepreneurs.

Addressing challenges in customs operations, CGC Adeniyi advocated for transparent communication channels, emphasizing the necessity of putting Africans at the heart of customs operations. He proposed the establishment of regular consultation platforms to facilitate constructive feedback from stakeholders, aiming to enhance the efficiency of customs operations and align them with the needs of the diverse African business community.

In recognition of his contributions, CGC Adeniyi was later conferred with the Fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs by the Director General of the Institute, Professor Eghosa Osaghae.
