Nigeria Customs Service vows to tackle food insecurity amid rising costs

Comptroller General Affirms Commitment to President Tinubu's Food Security Agenda

Must read

In response to Nigeria’s pressing food security concerns and the alarming rise in essential food prices, the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has reiterated the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) dedication to advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security initiative. This commitment underscores the NCS’s primary mandate of promoting the welfare and economic stability of the Nigerian populace.

Aligned with this vision, the NCS has initiated a strategic anti-smuggling operation and embarked on public engagement efforts to curb the illicit exportation of crucial food resources driven by individual profit motives. This proactive stance aims to secure domestic food availability and mitigate the adverse impacts of scarcity on citizens across the nation.

Moreover, in a bid to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians and enhance access to essential food items, the Nigeria Customs Service will facilitate the direct distribution of forfeited food items to the Federal Government. These items will undergo rigorous certification processes to ensure their suitability for consumption and will be distributed equitably to ordinary Nigerians nationwide, prioritizing areas most in need within our operational jurisdictions.

The modalities for this distribution will be communicated through NCS formations nationwide, with a firm commitment to upholding principles of transparency, fairness, and public safety. The NCS pledges to administer this initiative diligently to ensure that its benefits reach the most vulnerable segments of society.

Amidst these efforts, the Nigeria Customs Service remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the nation’s food security and promote the economic well-being of all Nigerians. With the collective support and cooperation of the public, the NCS is poised to overcome these challenges and chart a path towards a more prosperous future for Nigeria.
