Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has condemned the payment of pensions to former governors and their deputies, labeling it as daylight robbery, while commending Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for repealing the law enabling such payments.

Obasanjo made his remarks during a visit to Governor Otti’s residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, on Friday. He praised Otti for his bold decision to revoke the pension scheme, expressing hope that other governors would emulate his example.

Addressing Otti, Obasanjo criticized the lavish benefits enjoyed by former governors, highlighting the contrast with the unpaid pensions of ordinary citizens. He commended Otti for taking steps to end such excesses, emphasizing the importance of responsible leadership.

Acknowledging Otti’s resilience in the face of challenges, Obasanjo encouraged him to prioritize infrastructure development in Abia State. He emphasized that with adequate infrastructure and effective leadership, the state could achieve significant progress.

Obasanjo also praised the industriousness of the people of Abia and the wider South-East region, urging leaders to provide the necessary support and encouragement for their advancement.

In response, Governor Otti affirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development, particularly in Aba. He reiterated his stance against the pension law, emphasizing the principles of stewardship and service to the people.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Ondo State chapter of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Clement Fatuwase, lauded Otti’s decision to abolish life pensions for former governors and deputies. Fatuwase emphasized the inequity of such payments compared to the plight of ordinary workers, urging other governors to follow Otti’s lead in discontinuing the practice.

The commendation from both Obasanjo and the TUC underscores the significance of Otti’s actions in challenging unjust practices and promoting responsible governance. As leaders across Nigeria reassess their policies, the spotlight remains on efforts to prioritize the welfare of citizens and uphold principles of equity and accountability.
