Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised Nigeria to seek counsel from Zimbabwe’s recent experience in overcoming severe inflation, suggesting that dialogue and lessons from past crises could offer valuable insights in tackling Nigeria’s current economic woes.

Addressing a youth leadership symposium on the occasion of his 87th birthday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of learning from countries like Zimbabwe, which have successfully navigated through similar challenges.

Amid Nigeria’s staggering inflation rate of 29.9 percent and widespread protests against soaring living costs, Obasanjo underscored the need for resilience and proactive engagement with historical precedents to address the nation’s economic hardships.

In advocating for dialogue over violence in resolving conflicts across Africa, Obasanjo urged the cultivation of a culture of peace and security among the youth, emphasizing the pivotal role of love, kindness, and forgiveness in fostering stability.

Highlighting biblical figures such as Esther and Joseph, who exemplified resilience and humanitarianism in times of crisis, Obasanjo urged African youths to champion peace-building efforts and reject violence as a means of conflict resolution.

The symposium, themed “Opportunities for Peace: Roles of the Youths in Conflict Prevention in Africa,” sought to underscore Obasanjo’s commitment to youth empowerment and inclusive leadership, emphasizing the importance of meaningful youth participation in shaping Africa’s future.

The coordinator of the programme, Prof. Peter Okebukola, reiterated the significance of engaging youth as catalysts for positive change, emphasizing the need for inclusive policies and international collaboration to empower West African youths.

As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, Obasanjo’s call for dialogue and youth empowerment reflects a broader commitment to fostering peace and stability across the African continent, underscoring the imperative of collective action in addressing shared challenges.
