Ondo State APC elders divided over governorship aspirant endorsement

Party Leaders' Backing of Lucky Aiyedatiwa Sparks Controversy Ahead of Primary Election

Must read

In a move fraught with controversy, the All Progressives Congress (APC) elders in Ondo State, operating under the banner of Ondo APC Aborigines, have thrown their weight behind Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as their favored candidate for the forthcoming governorship primary. However, the decision has been met with resistance from the campaign organizations of other leading aspirants, Wale Akinterinwa and Olusola Oke.

The endorsement of Aiyedatiwa by the APC elders was announced following a meeting held in the state capital, Akure, where they cited his superior rating among the gubernatorial hopefuls. According to Sola Iji, the chairman of the group and a former Ambassador to Togo, the decision was reached after a meticulous screening process, which initially involved over 10 aspirants but was eventually narrowed down to three, including Aiyedatiwa.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Iji emphasized the unanimous commitment of the elders to ensuring a cohesive front in the upcoming primary. He highlighted Aiyedatiwa’s performance as the governor, particularly within his first 100 days in office, as a pivotal factor in their decision-making process.

However, the endorsement has sparked outcry from the campaign organizations of other aspirants, who have accused the APC elders of bias and favoritism. Segun Ajiboye, spokesperson for the Wale Akinterinwa Campaign Organization, questioned the fairness of the elders’ decision, pointing out their prior declarations of support for Aiyedatiwa.

Similarly, Ojo Oyewamide, spokesperson for the Olusola Oke Campaign Organization, dismissed the endorsement as inconsequential, asserting that the APC elders’ allegiance to Aiyedatiwa does not reflect the broader sentiment within the party. He reaffirmed their confidence in Chief Oke’s candidacy, citing his longstanding contributions to the party and his popularity among party members.

With tensions escalating within the party ranks, the endorsement of Aiyedatiwa by the APC elders has heightened the stakes ahead of the governorship primary, scheduled for April 20. As the contest unfolds, the party braces for further polarization and contentious debates over the rightful contender for the APC ticket in Ondo State.
