The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has greenlit the formation of Edo State Ward Caretaker Committees, set to operate for a 30-day period commencing Thursday, February 1, 2024. This move underscores the party’s readiness for the upcoming primary election on February 22, aimed at selecting its candidate for the September 21 governorship contest.
The decision to employ an indirect mode of primary, where delegates from each ward will cast their votes, was previously endorsed by the PDP NWC. However, the appointment of caretaker committees for the wards is necessitated by the expiration of the tenure of the Edo State Ward Executive Committees.
Debo Ologunagba, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, clarified that the transition to caretaker committees aims to prevent any organizational vacuum within the party structure in Edo State. He emphasized the imperative of continuity and cohesion among party leaders, stakeholders, and members to uphold the PDP’s interests in the state.
As the political landscape in Edo State evolves in anticipation of the gubernatorial election, the PDP’s internal mechanisms reflect a strategic approach to ensuring smooth transitions and operational efficiency. The appointment of caretaker committees serves as a pivotal step in maintaining stability and momentum within the party ranks as it navigates the electoral process.
