President Bola Tinubu and Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, expressed deep sorrow on Monday over the demise of acclaimed folklorist, dramatist, and playwright, Mr. Jimi Solanke, hailing him as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished creative talents.

Solanke, renowned for his iconic television program ‘Story Land’ aired on the Nigerian Television Authority, passed away on Monday morning at the age of 81, following a brief illness at his country home in Ipara Remo, Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State. He had been battling health issues since December.

The lawmaker representing Remo North State Constituency, Dickson Awolaja, confirmed Solanke’s passing, describing it as a significant loss to Remo North and Ogun State. Solanke’s contributions to the nation’s development, he remarked, were invaluable, and he offered condolences to the bereaved family.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu mourned Solanke’s demise, recognizing him as a paragon of Nigeria’s cultural heritage and a beacon of artistic excellence. Tinubu extended his condolences to the Solanke family and all those grieving the loss, praying for the peaceful repose of the departed soul.

Governor Abiodun also lamented Solanke’s passing, describing it as a monumental loss to the theatrical community and Ogun State at large. Abiodun praised Solanke’s dedication to the arts, noting his illustrious career, which brought acclaim to the state.

Acknowledging Solanke’s illustrious journey from the University of Ibadan School of Drama to international stages, Governor Abiodun hailed him as a remarkable ambassador of Ogun State. He highlighted Solanke’s pivotal role in promoting Yoruba culture globally and his unforgettable performances, which earned him accolades from renowned publications like the Oxford Times and the New York Times.

Governor Abiodun concluded by celebrating Solanke’s enduring legacy, marked by his exceptional contributions to epic performances and his portrayal of iconic characters, cementing his status as a global icon of the arts.
