President Tinubu’s intervention sparks mixed reactions, uncertainty in Ondo political crisis

Divergent Reports Emerge After Late-Night Meeting With Key Stakeholders, Leaving Ondo State in Political Limbo

Must read

Conflicting narratives surround the aftermath of a meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu with key stakeholders, including members of the Ondo State House of Assembly, aimed at resolving the lingering political crisis in the state. The meeting, held late at night on Friday at the State House, Abuja, sought to address the escalating tensions between Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and his deputy.

The crisis unfolded upon Governor Akeredolu’s return from a medical vacation in Germany, triggering an impeachment process against the deputy governor over allegations of gross misconduct. The resulting divisions within the Assembly, Executive Council, and the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress prompted the intervention of President Tinubu.

While some reports indicate a resolution to maintain the status quo—with Akeredolu as governor, Aiyedatiwa as deputy governor, and no impeachment—discrepancies persist. According to Speaker Olamide Oladiji, additional resolutions include preserving the unity of the House of Assembly, keeping the state Executive Council intact, and maintaining the party executive.

House spokesman Olatunji Oshati praised the president’s intervention, emphasizing the importance of peace. However, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party dismissed the meeting as mere “window dressing,” asserting that without Akeredolu’s return to the state, a meaningful resolution is unlikely.

On the contrary, the Ondo Solidarity Forum, a state APC pressure group, applauded Tinubu’s timely intervention, expressing satisfaction with Aiyedatiwa continuing as acting governor during Akeredolu’s absence. The group attributed the crisis to a select few within the state cabinet, described as a “cabal” vying for the governorship.

As the conflicting reports circulate, Ondo State remains in a state of uncertainty, awaiting a definitive resolution to the protracted political unrest.
