Rivers State APC challenges Fubara’s governance claims

Opposition Party Questions Governor's Four-Month Governance Assertion Amidst Unveiled Projects

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has criticised Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent statement that he has only been in control of the state’s governance for four months. The APC argues this contradicts Fubara’s first-anniversary celebrations, which featured the inauguration of various projects.

Governor Fubara’s comments, interpreted as a veiled reference to his political struggles with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, were met with skepticism by the APC. At a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Chief Tony Okocha, Chairman of the Rivers APC Caretaker Committee, accused Fubara of taking credit for projects initiated by the previous administration.

“The administration of Rivers State under Governor Siminalayi Fubara is a sham,” Okocha stated. “There is nothing to show for his time in office. If he can present one project that he initiated and completed in 364 days, I will publicly congratulate him.”

Okocha compared Fubara’s tenure unfavorably to other first-time governors, noting significant achievements in states like Abia, Akwa Ibom, and Ebonyi. He challenged Fubara’s claim of being in office for four months, questioning how the governor could celebrate a full year without contradictions.

In response, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, defended the governor’s record. Johnson highlighted several projects initiated and completed under Fubara’s administration, including the Eteo-Ebubu Road and the Andoni section of the Ogoni/Andoni/Opobo Unity Road.

“The claim by Chief Tony Okocha is unfortunate,” Johnson said. “The Fubara administration has successfully completed projects like the Trans-Kalabari Road, awarded for N225bn and flagged off by former President Goodluck Jonathan.”

Johnson also addressed allegations that N150 million was spent on statewide thanksgiving events. He clarified that these events were not state-sponsored, with only one official commemoration held at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt.

The debate over governance and project implementation continues to highlight the political tensions within Rivers State, as both sides vie for public support and credibility.
