Soldiers face court martial over arms sale, murder other offences in Plateau

In Plateau State, a court martial has been convened to address allegations against at least 16 soldiers and one officer, accused of offences ranging from armed robbery to murder and unlawful possession of arms and ammunition.

The inaugural session of the court martial took place at the 3rd Armoured Division, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Nigerian Army, located in Bassa Local Government Area, marking a significant step in the military’s internal disciplinary mechanism.

Maj. Aminu Mansur Mairuwa, the acting Deputy Director of Legal Services for the 3rd Division of the Nigerian Army, underscored the military’s commitment to discipline and adherence to established rules and procedures. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that military personnel operate within the bounds of rules of engagement and international best practices.

Presiding over the court martial, Brig. Gen. Liafis Bello reiterated the Nigerian Army’s dedication to discipline, regimentation, and professionalism. He emphasized that the proceedings were part of the military’s commitment to justice and adherence to command philosophy.

Maj. Nasir Abdullahi, serving as the Judge Advocate, emphasized the court’s role in enhancing discipline and ensuring timely investigation and prosecution of erring officers and soldiers. He urged all parties involved to avoid unnecessary delays in the dispensation of justice.

Representing the Plateau State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association, Samson Gotom, emphasized the importance of a fair hearing and expressed satisfaction with the composition of the court.

The court adjourned the proceedings until March 6, 2024, signaling the beginning of the trial process aimed at addressing the allegations and upholding the principles of justice within the Nigerian military.
