Tensions Rise as Hoodlums Target Philip Shaibu's Bus Amid Strained Political Relations

In a troubling turn of events, the campaign vehicle belonging to Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, was attacked and vandalized by gun-wielding hoodlums in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area. The incident occurred on Sunday night, raising concerns about the heightened political tensions in the state.

Shaibu, an aspirant for the governorship position under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), faced the destructive attack following a meeting with his supporters in Illeh, Ward 10. The campaign bus, reportedly destroyed after the gathering, has since been retrieved by the police for investigation.

Otoide Abas, the coordinator of Shaibu’s campaign in the area, recounted the incident, stating, “After the meeting, we went in the Sienna bus given to us by Comrade Shaibu to Ekpoma to meet with other supporters, and we decided to make a quick stop at the local market square in Ekpoma to purchase some beef barbecue (Suya).”

Abas continued, “We were standing by where we wanted to buy something when we saw about seven boys come down from a bus packed close by and started shooting; we all ran for safety, and they went to where we parked the bus and destroyed it. The police retrieved the vehicle that night, and as I am talking to you, I am in the police station because I was told to report today (Monday).”

This recent incident adds to the growing tensions within the political landscape of Edo State, with Governor Godwin Obaseki reportedly not supportive of Shaibu’s gubernatorial ambitions. The strained relationship between the two prominent figures has seen previous acts of aggression, such as the vandalism of Shaibu’s campaign billboard in the Ring Road area of the city in December. The deputy governor alleged it to be a state-sponsored attack aimed at thwarting his political aspirations.
