A political pressure group in Akwa Ibom has called on Governor Umo Eno to abandon the All Progressives Congress (APC) and return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that his recent defection was a “grave miscalculation—bleak, unsustainable, and rooted in expediency rather than principle.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, the PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice, chaired by Dr Tom Fredfish, urged the governor to “retrace his steps while there is still room for redemption.”
“Governance is not about endless political manoeuvring; it is about selfless service, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people,” the group said. “Akwa Ibom deserves a leader who is focused, courageous, and people-centred—not one distracted by petty rivalries and internal squabbles.”
The group accused Eno of aligning himself with “strange allies” who neither share his vision nor trust his leadership, insisting that the APC could never be his “natural political home.”
They also condemned the governor’s recent boast that he controls all political structures in the state, describing it as unbecoming. “Such an utterance paints the governor as one more desperate to consolidate power than to deliver on the mandate of good governance,” the statement read.
The PDP Advocates said Eno’s energy should be directed at tackling the state’s socio-economic challenges rather than “needless political grandstanding.” They also questioned the governor’s pursuit of dominance in the APC, recalling that Senate President Godswill Akpabio had already handed the party’s structure to him.
“This begs the question: what other structure is the governor struggling for, and against whom?” the group asked, arguing that the episode highlighted “a lack of clarity, conviction and direction” in his political journey.
