ASUU joins nationwide strike, mobilises members in solidarity with NLC and TUC

In a resolute move echoing solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a directive for its members to join the nationwide strike. The decision comes in response to the directive from the Joint National Executive Council of NLC and TUC, urging affiliate unions to commence the withdrawal of services at midnight on November 13, 2023.

The letter, signed by ASUU’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, was issued on Monday night, outlining the union’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Nigerian workers and supporting the leadership of the union. The nationwide strike serves as a collective protest against the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other executives in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, along with pending labor issues in the state.

The letter reads, “The Nigeria Labour Congress at a Joint National Executive Council of NLC and TUC directed all affiliate unions to commence withdrawal of services with effect from midnight today, November 13, 2023. As an affiliate of the NLC, all members of our union are hereby directed to join this action of the NLC to protect the interests of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the union.”

Emphasizing the power of unity, the letter calls on zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons to swiftly mobilize ASUU members, reinforcing the principle that a united front is unassailable. This collective action reflects the determination of the academic community to stand in solidarity with the broader labor movement, highlighting the shared commitment to justice and workers’ rights.

The strike, propelled by a shared sense of purpose, underscores the resilience of the labor movement in Nigeria and its resolve to address challenges affecting workers’ welfare and safety. ASUU’s participation adds a formidable voice to the chorus of demands for justice and accountability, reinforcing the notion that a people united cannot be defeated.
