Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has announced plans to commemorate the late Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Plc, Dr. Herbert Wigwe, for his significant contributions to the state’s development.

Wigwe, alongside his family and a former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Abimola Ogunbanjo, tragically lost their lives in a recent helicopter crash in the United States.

Speaking during the inauguration of sections 2 and 3 of the 22km Yenagoa Outer Ring Road, constructed by Lubrik, an Access Bank subsidiary, Governor Diri expressed intentions to consult with state elders and stakeholders to potentially name the road after the esteemed banker and entrepreneur.

Diri credited Wigwe’s pivotal role in the completion of the road project, highlighting its significance for the state’s infrastructure development. He assured that the remaining phase of the dualised road would be completed during his second term.

“With the completion of the first part of this road, it means that we can drive from Elebele to Igbogene and from there to the Ecumenical Centre and then to Tombia. In our second tenure, the remaining part of it will be completed to make it a complete ring road,” Governor Diri affirmed.

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State lauded the proposal to immortalize Wigwe, underscoring its importance in honoring his legacy. He extended congratulations to Governor Diri on his electoral victory and second-term inauguration, praising the unwavering support of the people.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Moses Teibowei, provided insights into the project’s execution, highlighting its phased construction and completion under the Diri administration. The road, spanning from Okarki to Imiringi Road, constitutes one segment of the dual carriageway from Elebele to Igbogene, enhancing connectivity and accessibility.

Distinguished guests, including former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, former Delta State Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and former PDP National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus, graced the event, affirming the significance of the infrastructure project and honoring the memory of Dr. Herbert Wigwe.
