Borno State police have recovered an unexploded hand grenade from a drainage slab in the Moduganari area of Maiduguri after residents alerted authorities to the suspected explosive.
The device was recovered on Saturday by officers of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Unit at Base 13, Maiduguri, following a report received at about 12.40 pm.
Police said the operation was carried out on the orders of the state commissioner, Naziru Abdulmajid, with officers promptly dispatched to secure and remove the device.
The grenade has been secured for further examination while an investigation is under way to establish its origin and the circumstances in which it was found.
The police public relations officer, Nahum Daso, praised residents for alerting the authorities, saying their vigilance had helped avert a potential danger.
Police urged members of the public not to touch, move or tamper with suspected explosives, but to report them immediately to the authorities.
The command said it remained committed to protecting lives and property across Borno state and called for continued public cooperation in reporting suspicious objects and activities.
