Customs Extends Deadline for Switch to Authorised Economic Operator Scheme

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced a month-long extension for companies required to migrate from the long-running Fast Track Scheme to the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme, shifting the deadline from 31 December 2025 to 31 January 2026.

In a statement on Thursday, the Service said the extension was designed to deepen trade facilitation, bolster supply-chain security and strengthen compliance in line with international norms. Fast Track beneficiaries yet to complete their transition have been urged to file their applications via the official AEO portal, with support available through a dedicated helpdesk. Only firms certified under the AEO programme will continue to enjoy the expedited privileges previously attached to the Fast Track system.

The AEO programme, recognised globally as a gold-standard compliance framework, offers trusted operators a suite of benefits — including quicker cargo release, fewer documentary requirements, reduced inspection levels and more predictable cross-border processes. Customs says the measure is aligned with the World Customs Organisation’s SAFE Framework and backed by the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.

As part of efforts to smooth the transition, the Service will convene a fresh stakeholder engagement forum on 18 December at the Lagos Continental Hotel, providing hands-on guidance, demonstrations and an opportunity for operators to quiz implementation teams.

Customs urged all affected companies to use the extended window to complete their migration, warning that full participation is essential to maintaining compliance, strengthening the supply chain and safeguarding legitimate business.

The Service reiterated its commitment to improving trade efficiency, shoring up national revenue and creating a transparent and predictable clearance ecosystem that enhances Nigeria’s competitiveness.
