Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has paid a brief but pointed visit to Burundi, signalling a fresh phase in the Dangote Group’s continental expansion and placing the small east African nation firmly on the radar of Africa’s biggest industrial investor.
Dangote, accompanied by Nigeria’s former president Olusegun Obasanjo, held high-level talks with President Evariste Ndayishimiye at the presidential palace, in a meeting described by officials as both diplomatic and economic in character.
Speaking after the discussions, Dangote said two technical teams – one representing Burundi and the other the Dangote Group – had been constituted to identify priority sectors and develop viable investment projects.
“Our focus really is investing heavily in the African continent, not anywhere else, and so Burundi is part and parcel of that African region,” Dangote said.
He pointed to what he described as strong prospects in solid minerals, power generation, agriculture, cement production and infrastructure development, stressing that the intention was to build a partnership with tangible benefits on both sides.
Official sources said the talks centred on potential cooperation in infrastructure, logistics, industrialisation and energy – areas the Burundian government has prioritised as critical to its long-term economic transformation. The engagement is understood to align with Burundi’s wider efforts to attract large-scale private sector investment and strengthen ties with influential African industrial players.
Observers have described the visit as a landmark moment, suggesting it could position Burundi as a more credible destination for mega-investors and integrate the country more firmly into Dangote’s widening investment footprint across the continent.
