The Ekiti State government has reaffirmed its determination to eradicate out-of-school children, with a renewed commitment to its free and compulsory education policy. Speaking at an event in Ado Ekiti, Professor Femi Akinwumi, Chairman of the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), highlighted the administration’s efforts in improving educational access and quality under the leadership of Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
During the inauguration of newly elected local branch chairmen of the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) in Ekiti State, Akinwumi stressed that the government’s wide-ranging initiatives, from infrastructure development to teacher support, are key to ensuring that no child is left behind in the state’s education system.
“The Oyebanji administration is fully committed to the free and compulsory education policy and to reducing the number of out-of-school children to zero,” Akinwumi said. He emphasised that the state’s programmes are designed to enhance both teaching standards and learning outcomes, ensuring a future where every child in Ekiti State has access to quality education.
Among the state’s accomplishments in basic education, Akinwumi noted, are significant investments in infrastructure to provide a conducive learning environment, the procurement and distribution of instructional materials, and consistent payment of teachers’ salaries and allowances. The government has also prioritised teacher training and professional development, extended the service of university graduate teachers to grade level 16, and approved housing and car loans to support teachers’ welfare.
Akinwumi urged head teachers to support the government’s mission by ensuring that no child is denied an education, warning against the collection of illegal fees from pupils. “Sanctions await violators,” he cautioned, underscoring the government’s resolve to maintain an inclusive, fee-free schooling system.
The outgoing local government branch executives of AOPSHON were praised for their efforts in strengthening the association, and Akinwumi called on the newly elected chairmen to build on the legacy of their predecessors. He highlighted the essential role that head teachers play in the collective goal of achieving a fully educated population.
Also speaking at the event, the state AOPSHON Chairman, Olusola Ajiborode, commended the state government for prioritising the welfare of teachers. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing reforms, which he said have significantly improved working conditions and the quality of education in Ekiti State.
As the Oyebanji administration continues its push for universal education, the pledge to eliminate out-of-school children underscores a wider commitment to educational development in Ekiti State.
