In a significant collaboration, the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) and the Nigeria Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA) have pledged to cooperate in trade facilitation efforts and safeguard the nation’s agricultural sector and exports.
The partnership, unveiled on Sunday in Abuja, follows a high-level meeting between Dr. Godwin Audu, acting Comptroller-General of NAQS, and Bamanga Jada, Managing Director of OGFZA.
Dr. Audu emphasized NAQS’s commitment to fostering trade while preserving Nigeria’s agricultural economy and adhering to global phytosanitary standards. He underscored the agency’s dedication to supporting exporters in meeting regulatory requirements and facilitating smooth processes for compliant stakeholders.
He expressed appreciation for OGFZA’s provision of office space at Onne Seaport, highlighting it as a testament to OGFZA’s commitment to bolstering NAQS’s operations.
Mr. Jada echoed the importance of collaboration between NAQS and OGFZA in safeguarding Nigeria’s agricultural economy. He commended NAQS for its trade promotion efforts while maintaining stringent standards, emphasizing the need for a harmonious relationship between the regulatory bodies.
In a related development, NAQS announced the establishment of an operations and enforcement department to enhance oversight and ensure judicious enforcement in the agro-industry. This initiative aligns with NAQS’s mandate to prevent the entry and spread of foreign pests and diseases while promoting sanitary measures in agricultural trade.
Dr. Audu also announced the promotion of over 100 agency officers to Assistant Superintendent of Quarantine I, underscoring the agency’s commitment to human capital development and staff welfare. He emphasized adherence to international standards and the agency’s open-door policy to foster innovation and improve service delivery.
Furthermore, Dr. Audu pledged to address infrastructure challenges and enhance operational tools for NAQS employees, underscoring the agency’s dedication to promoting ease of doing business and ensuring compliance with European Union export requirements.
As Nigeria navigates economic challenges and strives to enhance its global competitiveness, the collaborative efforts between NAQS and OGFZA signify a proactive approach towards safeguarding the nation’s agricultural interests and promoting sustainable trade practices.
