At least five people have been confirmed dead after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Durumi 3 area near Gudu Market in the Abuja Municipal Area Council on Saturday morning.
Ten others were rescued alive from the rubble, according to Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who provided updates on the incident through his X account.
Olayinka said the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, visited the scene and disclosed that the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, had directed that all casualties receive free medical treatment.
Emergency responders were still working late into the day to evacuate additional victims believed to be trapped beneath the debris.
Personnel from the Federal Fire Service, alongside health workers, security agencies and local volunteers, were deployed to the site as rescue operations continued.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over construction safety standards in the Nigerian capital, following a similar collapse in April in the Jikwoyi area of Abuja, where six people were injured after a two-storey building under construction gave way.
