Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Remanded Pending Bail Perfection in N500m Fraud Case

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi State, in Kuje Correctional Centre until he meets the conditions for bail granted to him.

Bello, facing a 19-count charge of money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of N80.2 billion, was granted bail in the sum of ₦500 million with two sureties. Justice Nwite emphasised that the bail decision lay within the court’s discretion, stating:

“I have listened to the arguments of counsel on both sides. Bail, whether opposed or supported, is at the court’s discretion. Ordinarily, the defendant’s prior conduct would warrant reconsideration, but given the conciliatory submissions from both senior counsel, I am inclined to grant bail under stringent terms.”

The court set strict conditions, including that the sureties must own landed properties within Abuja’s jurisdiction, submit their property documents for verification, and swear affidavits of means. Bello’s international passport was also ordered to be deposited with the court’s registrar.

Courtroom Apologies and Pleas
Bello’s counsel, J.B. Daudu, pleaded for the court’s indulgence, assuring his client’s commitment to the trial schedule. He attributed earlier delays to legal jurisdictional challenges, apologising for any perceived disrespect. He emphasised that Bello, a two-term governor, posed no flight risk, adding:

“During his tenure, he travelled abroad only twice. I assure the court he will appear for every trial date. This episode, though regrettable, is now behind us.”

Prosecution counsel Kemi Pinheiro did not object to the bail request, though he had previously filed a counter-application. The trial is set to continue on February 24, 28, and March 6–7, 2025.

Separate Charges Await
The case is not the only legal hurdle for Bello. In a separate matter before Justice MaryAnne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, he faces charges of alleged involvement in a ₦110.4 billion fraud. Justice Anenih similarly ordered his remand in Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the hearing of his bail application after rejecting an earlier request due to procedural flaws.

The unfolding legal battles cast a spotlight on corruption allegations during Bello’s administration, as the courts now move toward a full trial.
