A former governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a move that has reignited speculation about his political future ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Mimiko, who governed the state between 2009 and 2016, confirmed his departure in a letter addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 7 in Ondo West local government area, stating that his resignation took immediate effect from 10 April 2026.
“I am tendering my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective from April 10, 2026,” he wrote.
The former governor, who has maintained a relatively low profile in partisan politics in recent years, said persistent questions about his status within the party had compelled him to clarify his position.
“Speculations and inquiries about my membership status have made it necessary for me to clarify my position,” Mimiko said. “As I have been somewhat distanced from party activities, I wish to put it on record that I am no longer a member of the PDP.”
He added that the decision was taken “without animosity toward anyone”, offering no immediate indication of his next political destination.
While there has been no official confirmation of his future plans, his exit is likely to trigger fresh conjecture over a possible alignment with either the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), as political realignments gather pace ahead of 2027.
