Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has thrown his weight behind Governor Douye Diri, stating that the incumbent governor deserves a second term for the continued stability and progress of Bayelsa State. Jonathan made these remarks during a visit from members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Bayelsa National Governorship Campaign Council, former party governors, National Assembly members, and other stakeholders.
Addressing the delegation at his Yenagoa residence on Tuesday, Jonathan expressed his connection with Governor Diri and his awareness of the state’s developments under his leadership. The visit coincided with the grand finale of the re-election campaign rally for Governor Diri.
According to the former president, Bayelsa has witnessed advancements in security and infrastructural development during Diri’s tenure. He commended the involvement of key stakeholders, including former Governor Seriake Dickson and ex-Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Chief Ndutimi Alaibe, in PDP affairs, emphasizing the unity within the party.
Jonathan underscored the importance of a peaceful election in Bayelsa, emphasizing that politics should be a service-oriented activity rather than a do-or-die affair. He urged a standard approach to political processes, emphasizing the avoidance of crises and the need for unity.
“I have been in touch with our governor, and I believe he should be encouraged to do his eight years. He has been able to stabilize the state. Let us find a standard way of doing things. We cannot kill ourselves; we do not want a crisis,” Jonathan remarked.
The visiting delegation included PDP Acting National Chairman Amb. Iliya Damagum, former National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus, and governors from various states. The gathering of prominent party members highlighted the collective push for continuity in leadership for the benefit of Bayelsa’s progress and stability.
