Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has firmly asserted that he owes no apologies for backing the reelection bid of Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, in the November 11, 2023, off-cycle governorship poll. During a Yuletide visit by Governor Diri and a high-powered delegation to his residence in Yenagoa, Jonathan expressed confidence in Diri’s leadership and the overwhelming support he garnered from the people of Bayelsa.

Jonathan clarified his endorsement, stating that it was based on Diri’s visionary leadership, particularly in fostering peace and stability in the state. He emphasized the governor’s achievements in curbing the excesses of cult groups, contributing to the overall safety and security of Bayelsa.

The former president acknowledged the challenges faced during his own brief tenure as governor and applauded Diri’s efforts in steering the state toward progress. Encouraging the governor to do more in his second term, Jonathan highlighted the importance of addressing security concerns to attract investors.

In his response, Governor Diri expressed gratitude for Jonathan’s support and endorsement, attributing the People’s Democratic Party’s victory to the former president’s backing. Diri deemed Jonathan’s endorsement invaluable, surpassing the influence of financial contributions.

Diri expressed optimism about Bayelsa’s readiness for private investors due to the prevailing peace and security in the state. He thanked President Bola Tinubu for ensuring a peaceful, free, and credible election in Bayelsa.

Accompanying Governor Diri on the visit were National Assembly members, state executive council members, former state assembly members, and traditional rulers, among others. The delegation expressed appreciation for Jonathan’s continued commitment to Bayelsa’s development and stability.
