An inter-religious group, the Concerned Igbo Ministers Commission, has condemned the prolonged detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as a “demonic scheme” against the Igbo people. The group called on South-East governors, religious leaders, and the international community to unite in demanding Kanu’s release, accusing regional political leaders of colluding for their own gain.
In a statement signed by the group’s President, Rev. Tony Uzo Anthony, and General Secretary, Apostle Tony Osuji, they alleged that the South-East governors were complicit in keeping Kanu imprisoned for political reasons, claiming that the goal was to bolster President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances in the region. “We believe the governors are part of a conspiracy to detain our son, Kanu, until his release is politically expedient,” the statement reads.
The group also criticised the Nigerian judiciary, accusing the judge handling Kanu’s case of ignoring a Supreme Court ruling. “Kanu remains illegally incarcerated while others with far graver crimes have been set free,” the statement declared. They claimed the judge had previously admitted that the charges against Kanu were politically motivated, raising concerns about her refusal to release him.
Appealing to the global community, the group urged Nigerians in the diaspora to pressure the UK, Kenya, and the Nigerian government to secure Kanu’s release. They also accused South-East governors of benefiting from the unrest in the region through security votes, asserting that Kanu’s peaceful efforts have been undermined for political advantage.
“South-East governors and Mr President must not think we are blind to their schemes,” the group warned, demanding action from traditional rulers, religious figures, and pressure groups to reject what they described as an “evil” plan targeting Ndi Igbo.
As tensions over Kanu’s detention persist, the group’s statement underscores the deep divisions in the South-East and the growing calls for a resolution to the instability that has gripped the region.
