JAMB announces free registration for persons living with disabilities

In a groundbreaking move, the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has declared that persons living with disabilities (PLWD) aiming to partake in the 2024–2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can now register at no cost. Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB Registrar, made the announcement during the unveiling of the registration process, ensuring a more inclusive approach to the educational assessment.

Commencing registration today, Oloyede emphasized JAMB’s commitment to supporting PLWD by providing free application documents for the upcoming matriculation examination. This gesture seeks to eliminate financial barriers for individuals facing disabilities, fostering equal access to educational opportunities.

In a significant stride toward inclusivity, Oloyede revealed that audio books would be available for blind candidates as part of the digital adaptation of traditional reading materials. The audio books will be accessible in popular formats such as MP3, WMV, and WMA, ensuring compatibility with various devices capable of streaming audio records. This initiative reflects JAMB’s dedication to leveraging technology to accommodate diverse needs and enhance the examination experience.

The registrar attributed the idea of providing audiobooks to the first National Conference on Equal Opportunity for Access to Higher Education in Nigeria. Alongside blind candidates, JAMB extends its support to other categories of individuals facing unique challenges, including those with Down syndrome, autism, dyslexia disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This comprehensive approach underscores the examination body’s commitment to creating an environment that addresses the diverse needs of candidates.

JAMB’s move towards inclusivity is a testament to its recognition of the importance of equal opportunities in education, promoting a fair and accessible examination process for all candidates.
