Kyari emphasizes vital role of gas in economic growth

Presentation of Book 'The Rise of Gas' Highlights Nigeria's Commitment to Leveraging Natural Resources for Development

Must read

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has underscored the pivotal role of natural gas in driving economic growth and industrial development. Speaking at the public launch of the book ‘The Rise of Gas: From Gaslink to the Decade of Gas’ authored by Charles Osezua, Kyari emphasized the global significance of gas as an essential energy source.

Representing Kyari at the event, Oluwakemi Olumuyiwa, Head of Relationship and Stakeholder Management at NNPCL, reiterated the importance of documenting Nigeria’s gas sector and leveraging its abundant resources for sustainable development and energy security. With Nigeria’s vast gas reserves exceeding 200 trillion cubic feet and the potential to reach 600 tcf, Kyari stressed the need to prioritize gas production and supply to meet domestic demands and drive economic progress.

The unveiling of the book aligns with the Federal Government’s ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative, aimed at optimizing Nigeria’s gas reserves for both domestic consumption and international export, as highlighted by Kyari. He noted NNPCL’s pivotal role in advancing this agenda through strategic investments in critical gas infrastructure, including pipelines and processing facilities.

Author Charles Osezua expressed gratitude to NNPCL for its support towards the book launch, emphasizing the Company’s commitment to knowledge sharing and innovation within the gas industry. The book provides comprehensive insights into the gas value chain, making it relevant to policymakers amid the global energy transition, according to Afolabi Oladele, Chairman of the Impact Investors Foundation and former Group Executive Director of NNPCL.

Nigeria’s embrace of gas as a transition fuel reflects President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to make compressed natural gas widely available to all Nigerians, signaling a strategic shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy alternatives.
