The Labour Party chairmen from Nigeria’s North Central states have reaffirmed their unwavering support for embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure, following his legal triumph at the Federal High Court in Abuja. On Tuesday, the court upheld Abure’s leadership and validated the party’s March 2024 national convention in Nnewi, which secured him a second term.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Ibrahim Idoko, the Labour Party’s National Vice Chairman for the North Central Zone, extended congratulations to Abure and praised the judiciary for what he described as a significant victory for the party and for democracy. Idoko, who also serves as Benue State’s Labour Party Chairman, hailed the presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, for his ruling, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to officially recognise Abure as the legitimate leader of the party.

“The October 8, 2024, judgment reaffirms Barrister Julius Abure’s leadership,” the statement read. “We are deeply grateful to the judiciary for upholding the rule of law and ensuring that our party remains united and strong. The Labour Party remains focused on promoting the welfare of the Nigerian people.”

The North Central chairmen, representing states including Benue, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory, expressed their full backing for Abure’s leadership. They also called on all members, particularly those harbouring grievances, to set aside differences and rally behind the party as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Idoko urged the party’s factions to unite under Abure’s leadership, stating, “At this point, we urge all party members to join hands with the Abure-led committee to build our party as we prepare to rescue Nigeria in 2027.”

Despite the show of solidarity, divisions remain within the party. A faction led by Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State, has rejected the Federal High Court ruling and vowed to appeal the decision. Otti’s group remains determined to challenge Abure’s leadership at the Court of Appeal, casting a shadow over the party’s ongoing efforts to project unity ahead of the next national elections.
