Leadership transition in Arewa Consultative Forum signals a shift in northern socio-political landscape

In a strategic move reshaping the dynamics of northern Nigeria’s socio-political sphere, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has ousted Chief Gabriel Aduku, former Minister of State for Health under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, from the position of National Chairman. Aduku, who assumed the role in May 2023, faced an unexpected truncation of his three-year tenure.

The ACF swiftly appointed Mamman Osman, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as the new helmsman. The transition comes after the conclusion of Chief Audu Ogbeh’s tenure as the forum’s chairman in March 2023.

Responding to inquiries, ACF’s National Publicity, Prof. Tukur Mohammed-Baba, clarified that Aduku was never elected but selected, justifying the removal. He explained, “No ACF chairman was elected as such. The list was reviewed by ACF leadership selection committee; it’s the final list that was now presented, approved by the joint assembly, and inaugurated.”

The ACF convened on Tuesday to endorse and inaugurate the new leadership. Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu was named the Board of Trustees Chairman, while Mamman Osman assumed the role of National Chairman. Senator Fred Orti was appointed Deputy BoT Chairman, Ambassador Ibrahim Mai Sule as Vice Chairman BoT, and Murtala Aliyu retained his position as the Secretary-General.

In his acceptance speech, Mamman Osman pledged to “reinvigorate a new ACF that will be different in outlook and impact as it seeks to contribute to the national discourse on issues relevant to the Nigeria Project.” The meeting also received a goodwill message from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. George Akume, urging the ACF to provide the leadership needed for a new era in northern Nigeria, addressing social, economic, and unity challenges.
