Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, lauded the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their role in maintaining peace in the state amidst recent tensions sparked by Yoruba Nation agitators. In a statement delivered by his Special Adviser on Media, Suleiman Olanrewaju, during a meeting with Maj. Gen. Obinna Onubogu, the 46th General Officer Commanding of the 2 Mechanised Division, Makinde highlighted the effective response of security forces to the invasion of the Government Secretariat by agitators.

The incursion, which occurred last Saturday, saw Yoruba Nation agitators, adorned in masks and military attire and armed with weapons and charms, attempt to hoist the Yoruba Nation flag on the premises of the state House of Assembly. However, their efforts were swiftly thwarted by security agencies, leading to the arrest of 21 individuals allegedly involved in the incident.

Commending the prompt and coordinated efforts of security personnel, Makinde emphasized the importance of maintaining peace amidst challenging circumstances. He expressed gratitude for the timely response of security forces and stressed the need for collaborative efforts to address underlying grievances and minimize tensions.

In his remarks, Makinde urged the new General Officer Commanding to sustain the harmonious relationship between the 2 Mechanised Division and the state government, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation in addressing security challenges.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives South-West caucus condemned the invasion of the Oyo State Government secretariat, denouncing the actions of the Yoruba Nation agitators as a threat to peace and stability in the region. In a joint statement signed by James Faleke, Taofeek Ajilesoro, and Adewunmi Onanuga, the caucus called for constructive dialogue and peaceful resolution of grievances, reaffirming their commitment to democracy, justice, and unity.

As tensions simmer in the region, Makinde’s recognition of the efforts of security forces and calls for dialogue underscore the imperative of fostering understanding and cooperation amidst divergent viewpoints. In navigating the complexities of ethno-nationalist movements and ensuring the preservation of peace and unity, the governor’s stance reflects a commitment to inclusive governance and conflict resolution.
