NAFDAC Issues Urgent Recall of Nivea Deodorant Over Health Risks

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert, urging Nigerians to avoid a specific batch of Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant after it was flagged as hazardous by the European Union Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products. The recall applies to the 50ml roll-on product marketed as providing 48-hour protection in African climates and is linked to potential health risks, including reproductive harm and skin irritation.

NAFDAC’s notice, issued on Thursday, identified the product batch number as 93529610. The agency cited concerns over the presence of 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, a substance prohibited in cosmetics due to its potential to harm reproductive health, affect the health of an unborn child, and cause skin irritation or burns. Manufactured in Germany, the affected deodorant bears Bar Code Number 42299882.

The agency has urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution within the supply chain to prevent further distribution and usage. “Members of the public in possession of the affected batch should cease sale or use and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the statement advised.

Consumers are encouraged to report any adverse reactions associated with this product through NAFDAC’s various reporting channels, including their pharmacovigilance email, e-reporting platform on their website, or the Med-safety app available for download.
