NDC Rejects Circulating Primary Results, Summons Emergency Leadership Meeting

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has disowned a series of purported primary election results circulating on social media, insisting that only the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) is authorised to announce the outcome of its recently concluded nationwide primaries.

The party’s intervention comes amid mounting speculation over the identities of candidates who emerged from the exercise held across the country on 28 and 29 May as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the NDC’s national publicity secretary, Osa Director, urged members, supporters and the wider public to disregard unofficial results being shared online and in parts of the media.

“The general public is hereby urged to disregard the various results circulating on social media as the outcome of the nationwide primaries conducted by the Nigeria Democratic Congress on the 28th and 29th of May, 2026,” he said.

“The results of the primaries are with the National Executive Council of our great party. They are solely responsible for announcements of results.”

The party also announced an emergency meeting of its national executive leadership in Abuja to review the conduct and outcome of the primaries before any official declaration is made.

According to Director, the meeting was convened on the directive of the party’s national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson.

“On the order of the National Leader of our party, His Excellency Senator Seriake Dickson, a NEC meeting of the party has been called,” he said.

“Therefore, all members of NEC are to arrive at Abuja for a pre-NEC meeting on Tuesday, 2 June, while the NEC meeting will be held on Wednesday, 3 June, 2026.”

The NDC said the gathering would consider issues arising from the primaries and oversee the ratification process before the party submits its final list of candidates to the electoral authorities.

Party officials sought to reassure stakeholders that the official results would be released only after all internal procedures had been completed.

“The general public and stakeholders will be availed of the results of our primaries when we send the list of candidates to fly our party’s flag to the INEC,” the statement said.

The clarification highlights growing tensions and uncertainty that often accompany party primary contests in Nigeria, where disputes over delegate voting, candidate selection and result announcements frequently lead to internal disagreements and legal challenges.

Political observers expect the NEC meeting to play a decisive role in validating the outcome of the primaries and resolving any disputes before the party forwards its list of candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The NDC has not indicated when the final results will be published, but party officials insist that any information currently circulating outside official channels should be treated as unauthorised.
