Members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in the House of Representatives have reaffirmed their loyalty to the party and vowed to intensify opposition scrutiny of the Federal Government ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers, led by the House Minority Leader, Victor Afam Ogene, paid a courtesy visit on Wednesday to the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, at his residence in Abuja.
The delegation included George Ozodinobi, Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, Lillian Orogbu, Atta Achief, Chijioke Okereke, Peter Ozokwe, Murphy Omoruyi, Emeka Idu, Manuchim Omezuruike, Muktar Zakari, Yusuf Datti, Peter Aniekwe and Uchenna Okonkwo.
Also present at the meeting were Peter Obi, former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and other senior figures within the opposition bloc.
Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Ogene said the lawmakers were committed to strengthening opposition politics and defending the party’s core principles.
“This evening, we are here as members of the House of Representatives caucus of the NDC to reassure you of our commitment to serve the people of Nigeria in keeping with the motto of our party, service to the people,” he said.
Ogene said the caucus would continue to challenge the government and demand accountability on behalf of Nigerians.
“In rendering this service, we will hold the government of the day accountable to the people so that they would render to the Nigerian people the basic necessities associated with democracy and civil rule,” he added.
The minority leader described the NDC as the dominant opposition force in the House of Representatives, arguing that the party’s expanding parliamentary presence would amplify its influence nationally and internationally.
“We are now the major opposition party in parliament, especially the House of Representatives, from where we operate and with this number, our voice will be strengthened and heard,” he said.
“It will reverberate across not just Nigeria but across the world to hold the government to their responsibilities.”
Ogene further pledged the caucus’ continued loyalty both to the party and to Nigerian voters ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Responding, Kwankwaso praised the lawmakers for what he described as uncommon political loyalty at a time of shifting alliances and defections within Nigeria’s political landscape.
“We have to thank you for the loyalty, which, of course, is a very rare commodity these days,” he said.
“We appreciate you, and we want to assure you on behalf of the leader and the party that we’ll continue to do whatever it takes to carry you with us so that together we can succeed.”
The former presidential candidate also urged Nigerians to register with the NDC and obtain voter cards ahead of the 2027 elections, framing the next poll as an opportunity for political change.
“That will give everybody the opportunity to bring the required positive change that is coming by the grace of God in 2027,” he said.
Kwankwaso further called on party members to intensify grassroots mobilisation efforts, particularly among young people and voters dissatisfied with the current political order.
