Nigeria Immigration Deploys E-Border Solutions to Over 80 Crossing Points

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the deployment of advanced e-border solutions to more than 80 crossing points nationwide, in a significant effort to enhance border security and curb trans-border criminal activities. This move marks the first phase of the NIS’s broader e-border project, which aims to modernise the nation’s border surveillance and control systems.

Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nandap, made the disclosure during a visit to the service’s head office in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Speaking during an inspection of the new e-border system at the Ogun State command, Nandap declared an end to the reliance on traditional methods of border surveillance. She stressed that the newly deployed technology enables 24/7 real-time monitoring and intelligence gathering, empowering the NIS to track and manage border activities more efficiently.

“As of today, we have implemented e-border solutions at over 80 crossing points, and we plan to expand this significantly in the second phase. Our goal is to cover as many entry points as possible, using technology to assist our officers on the ground,” she said.

Nandap further revealed that Nigeria has over 190 recognised crossing points, with many more unofficial or unmanned areas frequently exploited for illegal crossings and irregular migration. The NIS, she assured, is committed to securing these vulnerable locations by extending the reach of its e-border system.

“The unmanned areas present a considerable challenge, allowing illegal crossings and unauthorised migration. We are addressing this by using technology to monitor these remote locations. With the e-border system, we will identify anyone entering the country and know exactly when and where they cross,” Nandap added.

The advanced system is also expected to bolster collaboration with other security agencies, enabling the sharing of critical intelligence and facilitating coordinated efforts to secure Nigeria’s borders.

The deployment of e-border solutions marks a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernise its border management, as the country faces increasing challenges from trans-border crime and irregular migration. The project’s next phase promises to cover more points of entry, further tightening the nation’s border security.
