Nigeria on Alert as New COVID-19 Variant XEC Sparks Global Concerns

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has issued a directive urging health institutions to heighten alert systems in response to the emergence of the XEC COVID-19 variant, a rapidly spreading strain that has triggered global concern.

In a letter dated December 5, addressed to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. O.N. Anuma, outlined the urgency of the situation. The XEC variant, first identified in Australia, has now been reported in 29 countries and is noted for its growth advantage over other circulating strains.

“You may wish to know that this variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health,” the letter stated.

Dr. Anuma emphasised the importance of immediate action, urging hospitals nationwide to activate alert systems and maintain a high index of suspicion for patients presenting COVID-like symptoms.

The directive also underscored the necessity of collaboration between health institutions and the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure an effective response to the variant. Medical professionals were advised to enhance monitoring protocols and share critical data on the XEC strain to facilitate coordinated containment efforts.

“We request your committee to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to share critical data regarding this strain and implement enhanced monitoring protocols,” Anuma wrote. “Timely information sharing among relevant stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, will be vital for effective response strategies.”

The XEC variant, first detected in Germany in June and later confirmed in the UK, US, Denmark, and other nations, has infected over 600 individuals worldwide, according to earlier reports. The strain exhibits new mutations that may enhance transmissibility this autumn, though scientists remain optimistic that existing vaccines will mitigate severe cases.

In September, PUNCH Healthwise reported XEC’s spread to 27 countries, including France and the United States. Since then, the variant’s reach has expanded, heightening the urgency for global and national health authorities to adapt strategies.

The Federal Ministry of Health’s directive signals a renewed commitment to safeguarding public health amidst evolving pandemic challenges, reminding stakeholders that vigilance and cooperation remain the most effective tools in combating emerging threats.
