Nigeria restores electricity to Niger following border reopening directive

Federal Government's Move to Reopen Borders Signals Renewed Relations with Neighbouring Country

Must read

In a significant diplomatic gesture, the Federal Government of Nigeria, led by President Bola Tinubu, has reinstated the supply of electricity to the Republic of Niger following the directive to open Nigeria’s land and air borders with the neighbouring country.

The decision to restore power supply to Niger comes after a period of sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in response to political upheaval within the country, including the ousting of President-elect Mohamed Bazoum in a coup.

Imposed in August last year, the sanctions included the suspension of energy transactions with Niger, leading to the cessation of electricity supply from Nigeria. However, with recent diplomatic developments, ECOWAS lifted the sanctions in February, paving the way for restored relations between Nigeria and its neighbour.

President Tinubu’s directive to reopen borders and lift sanctions against Niger underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fostering regional stability and cooperation. The move signifies a shift towards diplomatic dialogue and conflict resolution in the region.

The restoration of electricity to Niger holds significant implications for both countries, as Nigeria earns foreign exchange from the export of power, contributing to economic resilience and bilateral relations.

Stakeholders in the power sector welcomed the decision, noting its positive impact on cross-border trade and regional integration. Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, affirmed the agency’s readiness to implement the directive, signaling the imminent reopening of borders between Nigeria and Niger.

The move reflects Nigeria’s dedication to upholding diplomatic norms and promoting peace and prosperity in the West African region. As borders reopen and relations strengthen, the restoration of electricity serves as a tangible symbol of cooperation and goodwill between the two nations.
