A Lieutenant of the Nigerian Army was tragically killed, and four other soldiers sustained injuries during a shootout with terrorists in Borno State, announced the Defence Headquarters on Sunday.

The harrowing incident unfolded as insurgents launched an ambush, sparking a fierce gun battle with troops from Operation Hadin Kai, according to a statement by Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, Director of Defence Media Operations.

Edward confirmed that four military personnel were wounded during the operation and were currently undergoing treatment at an undisclosed medical facility.

In the aftermath of the confrontation, troops managed to seize five AK-47 rifles and 103 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition from the terrorists. Despite this success, Edward affirmed that the military remained in pursuit of the remaining insurgents who had fled the scene.

“On April 5, 2024, at about 0935hrs, troops of Operation Hadin Kai encountered a terrorist ambush along the Buratai-Buni Gari Road,” read the statement. “Sadly, during the encounter, the troops lost a Lieutenant, who was killed in action, while four personnel were wounded in action and are receiving treatment.”

“Troops reinforcement pursued the terrorists to their hideout within the Timbuktu Triangle and made contact. Troops neutralised six of the terrorists, recovering five AK-47 rifles and 103 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. The remaining terrorists ran in disarray,” the statement continued.

The latest clash underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian security forces in combating terrorism in the region. It follows the recent loss of 17 military personnel who were killed during a peacekeeping mission in Delta State, after being attacked by irate youths in the Okuama community on March 14.

The Defence Headquarters reiterated its commitment to maintaining security and stability in the face of such threats, emphasizing the resolve of Nigerian troops to confront and neutralize insurgent activities across the country.
