In a statement issued by the council’s Deputy Secretary-General, Prof. Salisu Shehu, on Friday, the President-General of the council and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, expressed deep concern over the tragedy. The floods, which displaced nearly all residents, claimed numerous lives, left many injured, and caused damage worth billions, have left the nation reeling.

The Sultan urged the Federal Government to marshal all available resources to alleviate the suffering of those affected. “We commend the efforts and empathy shown by both the federal and Borno State governments in addressing the crisis,” he said, before urging further action. “We implore them to fully mobilise all emergency management agencies to ensure the disaster is efficiently managed.”

The statement also highlighted the vital role of the North-East Development Commission in managing the aftermath and stressed the importance of coordinated support from both public and private sectors. “We call on the private sector, organisations, international donors, and well-meaning Nigerians to offer relief materials and services to aid the victims,” the Sultan added. “Our collective efforts will go a long way in easing their suffering.”

In a message of condolence, the Sultan expressed the council’s sympathy to the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, and the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Elkanemi, offering prayers for the victims. “May Allah grant the departed souls eternal rest and bring swift recovery to the injured. For those who have lost property and wealth, we pray Allah replenishes their losses.”

The council’s appeal underscores the urgent need for long-term solutions to Nigeria’s flood crisis, as communities across the nation continue to face the growing threat of climate-induced disasters.
