In a revealing statement, Dr Doyin Okupe, the Director-General of the Labour Party’s presidential campaign for the 2023 election, accused the party’s candidate, Peter Obi, of betraying the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in order to pursue his own presidential ambitions.
Okupe asserted that Obi’s decision to contest the 2023 election forced him to turn against Atiku, who had initially brought him into national politics. Dispelling rumours of his own betrayal, Okupe clarified his reasons for withdrawing support for Obi, indicating a lack of further interest in working with him.
“They said I betrayed Obi. No. How can I betray him? I started politics in 1978. Obi was nowhere else. My life and political destiny cannot be tied to Obi’s ambition. I wish Obi well, but I am done with him. We wanted to achieve something, but we couldn’t achieve it,” Okupe stated in a video that went viral on social media on Friday.
