In a somber turn of events, Acting Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was sworn in as the substantive governor following the untimely demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu earlier on Wednesday. Akeredolu, aged 67, lost his battle with prostate cancer in a German hospital.

The swearing-in ceremony, conducted by state Chief Judge Justice Olusegun Odusola, took place at 5.15 p.m., marking Aiyedatiwa as the seventh executive governor of the Sunshine State. The new governor, in his inaugural address, paid tribute to his predecessor, describing Akeredolu as a man of courage and conviction who stood for the truth, even at personal cost.

Aiyedatiwa pledged to continue the developmental initiatives of the late governor and sought support from stakeholders. He emphasized the responsibility of sustaining Akeredolu’s legacy, acknowledging the monumental achievements during his tenure.

The three-day mourning period, declared by the new governor, will involve fasting and prayer, commencing on Thursday and concluding on Saturday. Akeredolu’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and the Ooni of Ife.

The late governor, who had transferred power to Aiyedatiwa on December 13, 2023, had been undergoing medical treatment in Germany. The transition followed a period of political crisis and intervention by President Tinubu, ultimately leading to Aiyedatiwa assuming the role of acting governor.

The state commissioner for information and orientation, Mrs. Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, officially announced Akeredolu’s passing, attributing it to complications arising from protracted prostate cancer. Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be released by the family and the Ondo State Government.
