Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blaming the party’s protracted national leadership crisis for his decision to walk away.
Adeleke announced his departure in a statement posted on Instagram late on Monday night, confirming that he had submitted his resignation to party officials in Sagba Abogunde, Ward 2, Ede North, on 4 November 2025.
“Due to the ongoing crisis within the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party at the national level, I officially conveyed my resignation letter… on November 4, 2025,” he wrote. “I thank the party and its many members and supporters for the opportunities they have provided me, first as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and now as Governor of Osun State.”
His exit marks a significant rupture for the PDP in Osun, where Adeleke remains a dominant political figure. It also heightens the stakes ahead of the 2026 governorship election, with internal disputes threatening to weaken the party’s prospects.
State party officials had earlier signalled that Adeleke was reluctant to seek the PDP’s nomination for a second term unless the national leadership turmoil was resolved. The party’s hierarchy had expressed optimism that a settlement—one that the Independent National Electoral Commission would formally recognise—might persuade him to remain within the fold.
But with Adeleke now formally severing ties, the PDP faces fresh uncertainty just months before the electoral timetable begins to crystallise. Whether the party can broker a resolution in time, and whether it could lure the governor back, remains far from certain.
