Today marks a pivotal moment for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as it conducts its governorship primary in Edo State, with ten aspirants contending for the coveted ticket amidst heightened anticipation and meticulous security arrangements.

Held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, the primary is poised to determine the PDP’s candidate for the upcoming September 21 governorship election in the state.

The roster of aspirants includes notable figures such as Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shuaibu, former Sterling Bank Chairman Asue Ighodalo, and Blessing Igbinedion, daughter of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom.

Also in the running are Anselm Ojezua, Felix Akhabue, Martin Uhomoibhi, Hadizat Umoru, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Dr Earl Onaiwu, and Arthur Esene.

The party’s guidelines, released by state Organising Secretary Tony Anenih Jr., stipulate that delegates are to convene at the Edo Hotel Marquee in GRA, Benin City, for accreditation commencing at 8 am. Each delegate will receive a security access card upon accreditation before being ferried to the primary venue in dedicated buses.

Furthermore, stringent measures ensure that only designated buses carrying accredited delegates gain access to the venue, with vehicles conveying aspirants dropping them off at the gate and departing thereafter.

Delegates, aspirants, and their guests are mandated to be seated by 11 am, with stringent accreditation protocols in place for journalists and civil society organizations.

The Edo State PDP Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, underscored the party’s commitment to conducting a transparent, fair, and credible primary, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the pre-established guidelines for a seamless electoral process.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command, in light of the recent upheavals during the APC delegate primary, has heightened vigilance, recognizing the complexities and diverse interests at play. The police underscored their commitment to ensuring order and safeguarding the democratic process, signaling a shift in their approach towards party elections.

As the primary unfolds, all eyes are on Edo State, where the political landscape is poised for transformation amidst the unfolding drama of democratic exercises.
