The Ondo State Police Command has initiated an inquiry into the tragic death of Mr Alaba Abe, a key figure in Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s campaign team. Abe, affectionately known as Excel, served as one of the ward campaign coordinators during the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary, which saw Aiyedatiwa emerge victorious.

Reports indicate that Abe fell victim to an assassination plot orchestrated by unidentified gunmen in Supare Akoko, located in the Akoko South-West Area of the state, on Saturday evening. This disturbing incident unfolded shortly after the conclusion of the APC’s gubernatorial primary, marking a grim turn in the political landscape of Ondo State.

Sources reveal that Abe, who also served as the Returning Officer for the party’s primary in Ward 10, was fatally attacked outside his residence around 9 pm, sending shockwaves throughout the community.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami affirmed that the command had launched an investigation into the matter. “The command is aware of the incident at Supare; investigation is ongoing to unravel all that happened,” she stated.

Expressing condemnation and urging swift action, the Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation Foot Soldiers Independent Council issued a statement calling on state security agencies to diligently probe the assassination and apprehend those responsible. David Ajobiewe, the Director-General for the LACO-FSIC in Akoko South-West Local Government, lamented the loss of Excel, highlighting his invaluable contributions to the campaign without any history of violence or personal disputes.

Similarly, the Ondo APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Alex Kalejaiye, voiced his sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the need for proper investigation before the party issues an official statement. “It is very sad and unfortunate that one of our party men was killed, but we only read about it on social media,” Kalejaiye remarked, underscoring the party’s commitment to await formal briefing from the deceased’s local government chairman before making any public statements.

As calls for justice intensify and political tensions simmer in the wake of this tragic event, the investigation into Alaba Abe’s untimely demise stands as a critical test for law enforcement authorities and the political establishment alike, amid concerns over the preservation of peace and democratic integrity in Ondo State.
